80th Anniversary of the Hus' Congregation 3rd and 4th October 2009
Between the 27th and 29th September 1929 the Hus' Congregation in Botanická
street was inaugurated – only 2 years after the foundation stone of the
first Czech sacral functionalist building had been laid. We remember the 80th
anniversary with an exhibition in the Congregation premises, a ceremonial
service on Saturday at 5 p.m. and a concert on Sunday at 6 p.m. There is also
a special programme prepared in Avia. A 1930's style evening with music and
projections will materialize the atmosphere in which the Hus' Congregation was
built as a sign of eternity descending into our times. Enjoy the unique period
photographs from the Baumeister
magazine, published in March 1930 in Munich.
Night of Churches
The first Night of Churches took place in Brno and other South-Moravian towns on
Friday 29th May 2009 since 4 p.m. till the small hours. It followed the idea
of the „Lange Nacht der Kirchen“ – the long night of churches, a
tradition born in Vienna in 2004 that continually spread to all larger Austrian
towns. After five years, it crossed the border with the Czech Republic for the
first time, and it took place in many German towns as well. The programme in the
Hus' Congregation started at 5 p.m and lasted till 1 a.m. During that time the
Cafe restaurant Avia hosted sixty „pilgrims“, the Night's visitors, who had
here a free drink of their choice.

Oldest billiards club in Brno celebrated the 75th anniversary
On Saturday 6 December 2008 the members and guests of the oldest billiards
club in Brno met to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding. It took
place in the club at the newly opened Avia restaurant in Botanicka street in
Brno. A tournament was in full swing from the morning, and there was also a
match between the presidents of the Czech and Austrian billiards associations.
After the event entertainment with jazz music began during which a group photo
was taken. It captured the Czech and the Austrian club members with Mr. Marek
Faus – the best Czech cannon player – and Lada Kerndl – jazz singer,
and one of the stars of the event. In the centre you can see Mr. Antonin Filip,
a member of the club committee, holding the club flag – newly embroidered
according to the original pattern. The anniversary not only celebrated the
club's return to its original insignia but also to its original name –
AKK Brno.
